Owner is smoking/cooking meats in large cooker in the parking lot! Pulled/chopped pork is delicious and sauces are Eastern NC style (mild and hot). Nice owners that are focused on customer service. I've also had their BBQ at a catered event and it was just as good.

The most amazing carolina-style BBQ!! For some reason there is a big hamburger outside this place -- for me you gotta come here for the BBQ. We had the pulled pork sandwich and ribs with the baked beans. Pork sandwich was top notch -- great bark, tender and delicious. Get it with the coleslaw and add one of the 5-6 sauce options they have, all of which are house-made. Beans were crazy good too. The main thing I have to praise about this place is the RIBS! Some of the best I've ever had. Super juicy, tender, delicious, smoky, you name it. I would drive 100 miles for those ribs alone and you bet your pork-butt I'll be back for some next time I'm in town. The place is pretty small so I can see how it might get busy sometimes. Service was super friendly. Even chatted with the owner for a minute -- he has a killer classic car collection that you might see parked out front if you're lucky. Don't miss the Ribs!

Awesome bar-b-q! Discovered this tiny place on our last visit to North Myrtle Beach a year ago and couldn't wait to go back this year. The pork is very tasty and has a great flavor. Several sauces to choose from, and they are very good so try them all. Lots of sides to choose from as well. Love the cold slaw, potato salad, and bar-b-q beans. A pork sandwich and choice of side is very reasonably priced at $5.95 ! On this particular visit we were doing take out for 7. $44 fed 7 of us and we even had left overs to make sandwiches the following day. We all raved about how tasty everything was. The place is not that big and there are only a few tables so we prefer to do takeout. Service is quick. Brittany waited on us this year and last. She is super helpful and very good at making sure everyone is taken care of. If you are a fan of good bar-b-q as I am, make sure to check this place out!

Small spot with BIG taste! Was not expecting much from outside or inside of restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised! My wife and I split a order of mild wings. For "mild" they were a little hot but I actually thought they were perfect between no heat and too much heat. They had great flavor! My niece got a burger, and loved it. Someone else got the ribs which they liked a lot. She had us taste her baked beans which were some of the best I've ever had. They had a great smokey taste. Everyone loved their food, and almost no one could finish everything on their plate. Good price for the portions. The menu had only the things you'd want from a quality barbecue restaurant. Also, our server was super friendly and quick to help. They got busy later, and we had to wait a few minutes longer than normal to checkout, but that was understandable with the crowd. Also, check the menu pictures. They have good family deals on barbecue for takeout if you want to eat in.

Simply put, Awesome! Friendly staff, amazing bbq, sauces, hush puppies, fresh cut French fries, and last but not least banana pudding. Can't wait to go back

Cute atmosphere. I ordered the BBQ platter and was not pleased with my meal. 90% of the BBQ tasted very fatty, raw, and was pink. Probably one of the worst BBQs I've ever had. However I did get the hush puppies and potato salad which were both pretty good. I went with my family and my cousin got the BBQ as well and he ate most of his. Prices are cheap. The waitress we had was nice. But will not be coming back.

I'm a local who eats here regularly. I am sitting in the restaurant as I type this. Food is great but the waitress doesn't have her hair tied back per state law. I said something to the owners son. He brushed me off. He made a comment about the cook who has long hair. I said his hair is pulled back. He walked off like he didn't hear me. I feel sorry for the people that are bound to find hair in their food. I will not be back after the rude way I was treated.

AWFUL!!! I wish I could give this place 0 stars. My boyfriend and I had just arrived to myrtle beach for spring break. We were craving some BBQ so we stopped by this place around 7:15 ish (yelp said they closed at 9) We walked in...no greet...and then a lady comes out and asks if it's for here or to go. We say to go and she goes "GOOD! We close at 8:00." ......ok sorry for inconveniencing you. We wait about 15 min for our food and she packs it up with our choice of sauce. At this point the lady continues to be rude but nothing I can really do about it. Our total comes out to be around $14...there's an option to tip but we choose to opt out on tipping. We pay for the food and quickly leave...I felt very unwelcomed. The food was ok. Nothing special. Just average bbq. The pork was kind of questionable. The next day, my boyfriend checked the charges on his card and they ended up charging his card $17!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!! DO NOT go here. Mediocre bbq with HORRIBLE service.

We got a full rack of ribs and two sides. The ribs are good with lots of meat on the bone, moist and a dry rub. They have their own homemade BBQ sauces to choose from. The baked Beans were good to. Service was quick and friendly.

Very good roadside diner. Tried the BBQ sandwich w/ slaw and added their homemade vinegar based hot sauce. Reminded me of eastern NC bbq. They smoke the pork right outside and the smell is incredible. BBQ was very lean. All 3 of us cleaned our trays completely. Only thing is I hate I just now discovered this place. Will definitely be back when in town.

Stopped in to get a fix of southern barbecue. I was not disappointed I typically stay away from ribs because they are expensive and chances are they are not cooked properly. These were perfect smoked with they're own rub and not sauced. You can choose your own sauce from their table top selection. I couldn't stop the using sweet sauce but I also tried the spicy mustard. Barbecued beans were also great with lots of pork meat in them. Reasonable prices but it is a small place try off hours.

Great barbeque at great price.ribs and pulled pork were great.fast and friendly service too.I will be back here every time I come here from now on.

The pulled bar-b-q was yummy!!! We asked to sample before we bought the family value pack that consisted of 1 lb bar-b-q, 1 pint slaw, 1 pint bar-b-q beans,4 large buns/1 doz hushpuppies for only $19.99 and it feeds 3 to 4 and you can pick from a variety of sauces to add. The have a variety of items on their menu. You won't be disappointed.

The place itself is nothing fancy. No waiting tonight as other reviews mentioned. I got the chopped pork platter with onion rings and hush puppies. The meat was luke warm at best. A bit disappointing. However, it was moist. I got a piece of cartilage in one mouthful. The sauce options were good but the containers looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The onion rings were thin. I wish there was a bit more substance to them. The hush puppies were good. But a bit hard. I assume they were pre-made and quickly fried a second time. Overall, it was good but not the best I've had.

I have had a lot of barbecue in my life and Old South BBQ is one of the best barbecue places I have been to! Their wings are amazing!!! They are the best wings I have had in my life!! The service is good, and you get your food quickly. Also, their pulled pork sandwiches are amazing!!! They have a sweet, bbq, mild, hot, and hurt you hot sauce. If you love barbecue, I highly recommend coming here.

I'm updating my review from 4 to FIVE stars because I think this is the best BBQ in the entire Myrtle Beach area. We have been coming to this place for the last two years. The food is consistently great and everyone is warm and welcoming. We love this place and try to visit it when you are in the area.

Hands down the best smoked wings I've ever had! Thought my favorite place in PA had good smoked wings. That place doesn't come close to these! Wow! Pork platter was what I had and was very good too. BBQ slaw is lil spicy but good. Love the small BBQ joints!!!

  • Megs H.

Everyone knows that a hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint almost never disappoints... and this place is no different! Old South is a total dump location but DANG! is their food delicious! All pork, no brisket. All smoked flavor, no added sauce; you add your own at the table and can choose from 6 different kinds. Smart since they offer the thin, vinegar type, the sweet molasses type, spicy, etc. Chopped pork sandwich with coleslaw couldn't have been better or juicier! Natural cut fries seasoned great! Hubby got the bacon wrapped dog AND burger with onion rings and loved it all. Fried pickles and hushpuppies were also awesome and perfectly cooked! (Note: Puppies were more savory than sweet.) Don't be turned off my the giant plastic hamburger and the awful building... be turned ON by the smoker is the parking lot doing it's job! WARNING: sit inside... the flies outside are the absolute worst!!! (If the food wasn't so amazing, I would've docked 1 star for the absurd number of flies with no traps or deterrents.)

We r from Maryland and happy that we found this place. We ordered the pulled pork, ribs, & sandwich pulled pork, sweet tea, baked beans, corn. We loved it. I didn't like the potato salad much. The waitress was very nice. When we ate there a few of the local firefighters were eating there too. That shows me that this place is very well known by the locals.

Husband and I are from Memphis so we came in skeptical. We both got chopped pork with BBQ baked beans and cole slaw. Psst... Don't tell Memphis I said this but the BBQ beans here are WAY better than at home! GASP! They give you a variety of sauces to choose from: mild (vinegar-based), sweet (tomato-based I think), spicy red (a more trad'l BBQ sauce), hot (vinegar-based), and spicy mustard. I ended up loving the mustard sauce! The pork itself was tender and juicy. Cole slaw wasn't overly sweet- a pet peeve of mine. Great service. Clean restrooms. Would definitely return!

Great BBQ joint! A must visit when I am in town. I I always get the pulled pork plate and haven't had a bad side yet. I'd would highly recommend the cole slaw and hush puppies. My Dad lives in North Myrtle and frequents here 2-3 times a week.

Really good chopped sandwiches and fries! A great hole in the wall place to eat!!! I will definitely be back here it is very busy at lunch but we got take out and they were very quick and everything was great!!!

Just left...great service!!!!!!!!!and bbque was very lean and moist. Had hush puppies, onions rings and corn. Sounds like we need to come back for the wings! Just wish the spicy/sweet sauce had a little more spice but my favorite.

This is the best BBQ place I've ever been to. Driving 30 minutes is well worth the trip. Sandra is the epitome of Southern hospitality. The ribs are smoked to perfection and the hand cut fries couldn't not be better. I can't wait to go again.

This place is great. This is the best Q in NMB. The pork sandwich was chopped just right and the cole slaw on top combined with a combination of the hot barbecue sauce and mustard sauce was southern harmony. The beans were great with just the right amount of heat. They were sold out of the smoked wings which would have been our appetizer. I wasn't disappointed as I knew I'd be back in the next day or two. The staff was prompt and courteous. The owner Butch was a character and great to talk to. He told us the history of his barbecue career and his competition days as well as his awards won for his sauces. He deserves an award. He made me a die hard mustard sauce fan. HIS house - made mustard sauce. All of the sauces are vinegar based except the sweet. All great. He told us he sells out of wings so we should get there early in the day. He stated that some people will order a hundred at a time. I returned around lunch two days later and got my wings. FANTASTIC! Not too smoky, not too saucy. Just right. I would have liked to had seen a brisket option on the menu but then again, "if it's not broke then don't fix it" is most likely their manifesto as it has that vibe. Go there, get Q'd, experience good food. Thanks Butch. 5 stars.

The smoked wings and the spicy red sauce are excellent. Had the pulled pork with beans and hush puppies. My oldest son had the ribs and he liked them.

  • Elizabeth M.

I started with their mild wings and they were really good! The wings are smoked before being put in sauce so they would good plain too. My entree was the chopped pork plate and I found the barbecue to be fairly average the meat was smoked well, but the sauces weren't too great and I was especially disappointed in the mustard sauce. Being from SC I judge barbecue joints in the state based on the quality of the mustard sauce and this one was not at all good. It lacked the slightly sweet finish that most mustard sauces have and was very spicy. I would recommend trying something else for the main dish, but definitely get a side of the baked beans because those are worth a try.

Yum! Yum! Yum! My family and I are from Texas, aka brisket country, so we had to check out S. Carolina barbecue. This hole in the wall place did not disappoint! You can taste the hickory flavor in the meat without it over drying and the hush puppies and BBQ beans were addictive! They have a variety of sauces to check out...my favorite was the spicy mustard. The only thing I would change would be the potato salad. It tasted like something you would buy at a grocery store instead of the home made side you expect. It you are looking for a local BBQ place, Old South is the place to go!

  • Tia H.

Really great BBQ, the service was good too. Try all the sauces, I mixed the mild with the sweet and it was perfect on the super moist chopped pork sandwich. They have a great selection of sides too. Cons: the coleslaw was dry and bland, don't bother ordering it as a side. Not good, but everything else made up for it.

Windy Hill Location..Major disappointment , the pork was shredded so fine it was almost mushy and tasted like nothing.. Cole slaw was old and tasted like they forgot to dress it. The little bit of sauce we did get seemed tasty. Chicken tenders very cheap poor quality. Service not friendly .

  • Denise V.

I went to the new location in Windy Hill. I've been coming to Myrtle Beach for 8 years now and we always look for some great BBQ. We liked KTs but that closed. Anyway, this is hands down the best BBQ at the beach. Skip Sticky Fingers next door and come here. Nothing fancy just good food and nice people. We had the rack of ribs and split it. Tons of food. The BBQ baked beans were yummy, corn grilled and cooked just right. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Just stopped in to try and the food is AMAZING. Ordered the BBQ sandwich and it was so good that me and my wife had to order another one. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants really good smoked BBQ sandwich's.

  • Sue F.

This place was terrible, if you know your BBQ. There wasn't a smoke ring in any of the pork sandwich and the ribs did not have all the fat rendered out. Barely edible. I feel sorry for everyone that gave it 4 or 5 stars as it shows they have not had true BBQ. I waste of $22. We took it to go, but had we eaten in, j would have sent it all back.

SEEK THIS PLACE OUT!!! It is extremely inexpensive. It is extremely delicious. It is extremely local. Did I mention it is delicious?? The tater salad, onion rings, aren't made in-house, but everything else is. The sweet tea deserves a nod, as it is among the best I've ever had. The pork was amazing! Tender with a ton of smoke flavor. Their giant smoker was full of butts and ribs when we were there. The smoked chicken wings (6 for $5.00!!!!) were FANTASTIC!! The 5 sauces are made from scratch as well. Several picnic tables outside, just a few tables in the air-conditioned restaurant. Best BBQ joint I've been to in a long time.

When I go on vacation I avoid the chain place and try to find the hole in the wall places that know the local fare. Old South is that kind of place. This is the best Carolina bbq I've had since I got here. Got the chopped pork sandwich, slaw on top of course (it's a Carolina thing), and their homemade barbecue sauce. Best. Sandwich. Ever. My server also said their smoked wings are phenomenal, best served naked with sauce on the side. There might be another trip in my future before I go home!

This place was taken over by new owners in early 2014. It lies between my home and Cherry Grove Beach so I go by often. Building is a small glass cube and looks like a 50's Dairy Queen. It has a tacky plastic hamburger outside. No wonder I just drove on past for 4 or 5 months. Then, one day, I noticed a monster double smoker parked beside the building: I mean a huge competition smoker. Thought, "gotta try this place." Just did! Best BBQ I've ever eaten, and I'm from NC and eaten at all the famous places in Lexington, Raleigh, Kinston, Charlotte, Rocky Mount, even the rib place in Kansas City. Served butts, so for Tar Heel, you're eating Lexington - not Eastern NC whole hog. Pork was wonderfully moist and smoky; perfect. Also had wings; also smoked (my first experience and a BIG step up from fried.) My son is bring 12 golfer friends to the Beach in September, and they are already anticipating take out for 12. Old South serves its chopped pork without sauce, and provides Lexington, Eastern Sweet and a couple other sauces. Loses something not mixed with the Q, but understanding where Cherry Grove patrons come from, a wise business decision. All the sauces were very good from a spoon. I put Lexington on my $4.99 Big chopped sandwich. (As much Q as my wife's chopped tray though much messier to eat.) The furnishings are as unattractive as the building, but Oh, the FOOD! This place brings back a lot of food stories: they even have banana pudding.

Very good place to grab a burger or fresh cooked barbecue sandwich. Will cost about $10 a person with tip added.

I'm not one to usually write a review but this was too good no to show some love! I'm a self appointed BBQ snob but this place was on point! The cook was perfect and there is a flavor for everyone. I also got to try the wings. Do yourself a favor and get some wings!!! The staff is friendly and everyone has a smile on their face. Can't wait to go back!!

Stopped by here on our family vacation. We could smell how great it was going to be when we got out of the car! Great value! Plenty of choices for kids and a great price for the family meal to feed 5 hungry adults! Frickles rock!

Excellent food, excellent hospitality! This ace is everything you want to experience in a southern BBQ place. It's nothing fancy, it's not a big place it's just right. Loved every single bite, you will not be disappointed.

The sign says "best butts on the beach" and it doesn't lie. Not only is the smoked on site BBQ great but their fries are seasoned and just delicious.

Awesome food! Way more than we expected from a tiny hole in the wall. Evidently loved by the locals as well. Seen many people picking up to go orders on their way home from work. Definitely will be back! Oh...watch out for the red slaw though. It packs an unexpected punch lol
